THE interior of the distinctive Albany Building in Old Hall Street is a hive of industry as construction workers press on with the £12m conversion to luxury flats.
Hidden from passers by in Liverpool's busy business district, a web of scaffolding has been constructed to help building company David McLean carry out the work.
The Albany was built in 1856 and was a meeting place for cotton merchants. Its design was based on a building in Rome, the Polazza Firnesse, which is now the French embassy.
It was home to a variety of businesses until the 1980s when it was closed and has lain empty since.
Last year an agreement to develop 116 flats was concluded and McLean was appointed to carry out the conversion.
The design includes a car park to the rear and work is due to finish next spring.
