PLANS for a stunning new Liverpool skyscraper have todaybeen submitted to the city council.
Brunswick Quay, at 50 storeys, will be the biggest residential tower block in the north of England, if planners give it the green light.
The £70m glass edifice at Brunswick Dock, close to Liverpool Marina, will contain about 532 apartments, shops, bars and restaurants and a public park.
Property firm Maro Developments has been in talks with the council for months. Now the plan could be a stage closer.
Chris Ives, Maro development director, said: "We hope that planning permission will be granted before the end of the year and once a decision has been made, we plan to start on site immediately and work towards completing the scheme in time for the Capital of Culture celebrations in 2008."
Architect Ian Simpson, who studied in Liverpool, said the tower will complement the Four Graces further along the river front and will create another new icon for the city.
He added: "The distinctive form of the tower will provide a dramatic and unique addition to Liverpool's famous waterfront, respecting the city's heritage, reinforcing the regeneration initiatives already under way and creating a new 'place' that will make a real difference to the city and its people."
Frank McKenna, chairman of Downtown Liverpool in Business which seeks to improve business prospects in the city for the private sector, said: "We welcome this proposal.
"It demonstrates a renewed confidence in the city from outside investors."
