ONE of the ugliest buildings in Liverpool was finally sold last night - clearing the way for its almost certain demolition. Concourse Tower, next to Lime Street Station, has been bought by Government regeneration agency English Partnerships (EP). It would be a huge shock if the tower was not now brought down, but the agency is obliged to consider a full range of options for the site. The acquisition is part of a flagship project to make Lime Street a world-class gateway into Liverpool in time for Capital of Culture year in 2008. ::MORE::

Tower blot to be demolishedSep 6 2004 By Neil Hodgson, Liverpool Echo LIME Street's controversial Concourse House will be demolished and could be replaced by a modern 30-storey residential tower. The ECHO can reveal that the project will be officially unveiled next month at a global property exposition in Munich, Germany. Regeneration companies Liverpool Vision, English Partnerships and Liverpool Land Development Company are attending Expo Real in the New Munich Trade Fair Centre from October 4-6. The centrepiece of their exhibition will be the project to demolish the drab Concourse House office block and develop a vibrant new gateway to the city, including a public plaza. None of the parties could comment but an insider said: "The decision has been taken to get rid of Concourse House. There will be a new tower to replace it." The ECHO understands the agencies hope to appoint a development partner soon to begin the redevelopment of the key site. Government agency English Partnerships bought the office block last month after three years of trying, with the options to refurbish it or redevelop the site. Last month the block was declared the undisputed winner in an ECHO readers' Blot Idol campaign to name the five worst buildings in the city. Expo Real is an annual international commercial real estate exposition based on building and construction, marketing and selling. It attracts world leading developers, financiers, architects and investors. Last year's event recorded a 25% jump in visitors as 16,000 people from 63 countries attended the show. The number of exhibitors outside Germany also jumped by 16%, making a total of 1,000, including economic regions and cities, developers, consultants and banks. Earlier this year China hosted its first Expo Real in Shanghai, the first event of its kind in the Communist state. Source: Liverpool Echo
