Being funny started at an early age for Boardman. He said: "The thing was I was always in a comedian at school. I was in class with 55 kids. By the time they called the register, it was play time. I had to get in early. If your name began with "Y" you'd get another 20 minutes lie-in. Stan explains: "I went to a local club and entered a competition where you tell a joke and try not to get booed off. I won that a couple of times and I went on from there. I went to Butlins, won a competition there. I won the Star Act of the Year, I went to the London Palladium - so actually I started at the top at the Palladium." More television exposure came with the hit stand-up comedy series The Comedians in the 1970s, which saw Boardman share the stage with several names that have gone on to be comedy legends, including Jimmy Tarbuck, Jim Bowen, Tom O'Connor, Jim Davidson and Roy Walker
