Mr Hughes passed away in the city he loved on May 8, aged 84. A memorial to the architect, soldier and historian - a passionate advocate of his home city's significance on the world stage - will be held at a later date. Among his many achievements he founded Liverpool's Victorian Society, and was chairman of the Mersey Civic Society for many years.His 1964 book, Seaport: Architecture and Townscape in Liverpool, described it as the finest Victorian and Edwardian city in Britain.In 1999, he produced the definitive Liverpool: City of Architecture. James Quentin Hughes was born in Liverpool on February 28, 1920. During World War II he was also involved in sabotage missions for the SAS in Italy.
