£6m facelift will bring new life to old BICC site
Work on the first phase of the regeneration of a former industrial site in Prescot will begin later this month after £6m of funding was secured.
Knowsley Council's planning committee has already given the go-ahead for the scheme that it is hoped will create up to 700 jobs. Its aim is to construct high quality commercial units for use by small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Huyton Prescot Link Strategic Investment Area is leading the project on the site of the former British Insulated Calendar Cables (BICC), close to Prescot town centre.
The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is providing £2.9m, English Partnerships £2.6m and Knowsley Council making up the rest.
The council's cabinet member for regeneration and development Graham Morgan said: "The £6m will provide a much-needed investment in Prescot, helping new businesses to start up and existing businesses to stay in the town and grow.
"This regeneration will encourage the economy in Prescot to flourish and help to create and safeguard jobs for local people."
The scheme involves construction of a new road, the clean-up of the 17-acre former BICC Pyrotenax site next door to the Pirelli complex, and the formation of plots for new industrial development there.
The development will create 175,000 sq ft of new light industrial accommodation for SMEs.
The first phase of the road will run from the existing roundabout at Manchester Road-Steley Way, through vacant industrial land, to Carr Lane.
Future phases of the scheme will see the road extended through to Junction 2 on the M57.
The go-ahead followed widespread community consultation in the area on various options for the regeneration of .
The overall programme is expected to deliver in the region of 1,800 jobs, clear up acres of derelict and neglected land and provide improved traffic flows for existing and proposed users.
