The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will be in Liverpool today. It's almost two years since the royal couple's last visit to the city. This time, they're here to attend the Maundy service being held at the Anglican cathedral. Beforehand, there will be a procession of the Queen's bodyguard of the Yeoman of the Guard through Liverpool. Police have warned that many streets along the route will be closed to traffic. During the cathedral service the Queen will hand out money to 78 men and 78 women. The local pensioners were selected for their outstanding contributions to the church and their communities. Organisers have selected 78 men and women as a way of marking the Queen's 78th birthday celebrations which take place on April 21. The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Ron Gould, said: "It is a wonderful honour that the Queen has chosen to visit Liverpool this year for the Maundy Thursday celebrations. "I am delighted that some of the people who make such a great contribution to our city are receiving this prestigious award from Her Majesty."
