ENGLAND'S heritage boss has praised Liverpudlians' gritty determination and love of their city.
Sir Neil Cossons also applauded the ECHO's Stop the Rot campaign for mobilising public support to save Liverpool's historic landmarks.
The English Heritage chairman told a national urban regeneration conference in the city that he admired the "sparky, gritty Liverpudlian resilience" and was confident Liverpool, the UK's finest Victorian city, would achieve world heritage status.
He praised the Rope Walks redevelopment and said finding new uses for buildings like the Welsh Presbyterian Church on Princes Avenue, on the Stop the Rot hitlist, "de-manded imagination".
"The city is loved by Liverpudlians. The success of Stop the Rot is down to the ECHO, but also to striking a chord with Liverpool people.
"Liverpudlians have always believed it's a great city, but when there's decay around you, it takes faith to believe in that."
