LIVERPOOL poet Roger McGough has been commissioned to pen an ode to his home city for a television programme.
Fivearts cities, a collaboration between Channel Five and Arts Council England, commissioned a poem from the award-winning poet to celebrate Liverpool.
It has been chosen as the inaugural city in the Fivearts cities initiative, encouraging people to enjoy the arts.
The first, centre and last letters of each line of his acrostic poem spells Liverpool when read vertically.
As part of the initiative, McGough and fellow Liverpool Poet Brian Patten will also present
Liverpool: A Lyrical City on Five, taking viewers on a poetic tour of the city to discuss its history.
Within the 30-minute programme, McGough and Patten will each choose five locations which they think typify Liverpool's unique artistic, social and cultural heritage.
The tour covers some of Liverpool's best-known landmarks including the Albert Dock and Liver Building as well as some lesser-known sites and sounds of the city.
Liverpool: A Lyrical City will transmit on Channel Five in September.
