LIVERPOOL has been *celeb central this week, as the stars flocked to see what the city has to offer.
The first night of the play The Anniversary at the Liverpool Playhouse attracted more than its share of the talented and famous.
Directed by Scottish actor Denis Lawson, who has himself starred in Star Wars, Local Hero and Holby City, it tells the tale of a domineering mother played by legendary English actress Sheila Hancock.
After the performance, a special reception was held at the Circle Bar in the theatre.
There to support his Uncle Denis in his major directing debut was film star Ewan McGregor.
Star Wars and Trainspotting star Ewan has often credited his formerly better-known uncle with inspiring him to enter the world of showbusiness.
At the Playhouse, he was sipping champagne and looking well-groomed and dapper - unlike recent photos of him.
He told The Insider that he had recently completed an epic round-the-world journey by motorbike with his friend Charley Boorman. The mammoth trip was filmed for a documentary, and also benefited the charity UNICEF.
Ewan, looking every inch the star during his trip to Liverpool, told of his shock at seeing all the newspaper coverage of himself during the bike ride - sporting a huge beard and scruffy clothes, looking like a Hell's Angel!
Also there on the night was pregnant actress Samantha Janus. She was there to watch Mark Womack,
Liverpool 1 star, who also appears in The Anniversary.
Former Brookside star Diane Burke was also in attendance.
The recent special appearance by singer Donny Osmond at the Hope Street Hotel also proved to be a big draw. Organised by Magic 1548, the pearly-toothed singer was watched by former Take That man Gary Barlow - now working on new material with Liz McClarnon - and former assistant manager at Liverpool, Phil Thompson.
Also at the Hope Street Hotel on the night was Liverpool FC's bright new hope, Luis Garcia, TV presenter Loyd Grossman, as well as Hollywood star turned singer Minnie Driver.
Minnie was eating in the restaurant there - which just goes to show Hollywood actresses do eat after all.
* THERE might be a traditional rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester - but Oasis star Noel Gallagher is having none of it.
The famous Mancunian was asked on Sky Sports' show Soccer AM whether he was annoyed that his favourite band The Beatles were from Liverpool.
Noel, who doesn't suffer fools gladly, immediately snapped back: "Of course not!", going on to say how much he loved Liverpool and what good friends he had here.
Speaking elsewhere about the forthcoming Oasis album, due out next year, he says one of his favourite new songs is called The Importance of Being Idle, which he describes as 'one of the best songs I've ever written. It's The Kinks meets The La's.'
* HEIDI Range from the Sugababes has spoken out about her superstitions.
The pop singer from Aintree usually looks the very epitome of class and style - unless she's walking under a lamppost, that is. "Then you have to spit," she says. Nice.
She's very polite to magpies though - if she sees one, she says: "Hello Mr Magpie, how's Mrs Magpie and the family?"
*ATOMIC Kitten's Jenny Frost might be concentrating on solo material at the moment - but she has also made a sideline into the world of design.
A keen fashion fan, the blonde singer has designed a handbag to help raise funds for the charity Shelter. It is based on a seaside theme, and has also been used to inspire a limited edition Diet Coke can.
The bag will be auctioned off to raise cash for the good cause.
Who knows whose nose?
PHIL THOMPSON, former Reds' assistant manager, showed his sensitive side when at a function in Liverpool. He was walking past DJ Pete Price, who was deep in conversation with a pal, discussing past passport photos.
Pete happened to say "You should see them, my nose looks enormous!" just at Phil was within earshot. Phil - famed for his impressive hooter - straight away responded: "Are you talking about me?"
*term used loosely!
