ABOUT 60 jobs and £4m in turnover are expected to be generated in the Merseyside media and film industries in the next three years.
Five Merseyside companies have been awarded £375,000 of investment by North West Vision, the Film and TV agency for England's North West.
The European Objective 1 money will be used to develop the top media companies and talent in the city, through the Merseyside TV and Film Development Fund.
Among the companies awarded money is the multi-award winning RED Productions, who have set up a subsidiary on Merseyside.
The company is currently filming Big Dippers on location in Liverpool, New Brighton and Birkenhead, with Cold Feet star James Nesbit, who will today receive the funding on behalf of the city.
The two-hour drama will premiere on ITV next year.
Andrew Critchley, managing director of RED Productions, said: "We're delighted to receive Objective 1 funding and to
realise our long-held ambition to establish a base on Merseyside.
"We're committed to working with local crews and facilities and hope that this will help to enable people to remain in the area rather than have to move to London for TV work."
The fund is also working with four other companies to build a professional infrastructure that can offer skills and services that are the equal of anything else in the UK.
Fubar Post Production has set up Merseyside's first 'one-stop shop' for all broadcast editing and post-production needs.
Liverpool Scenic Workshop has established the first comprehensive props and set building company on Merseyside, while River Media has created a high definition compositing and special effects suite in order to develop its advertising work and to train the next generation of graphic artists.
Broadside Films has established a permanent development division and is working with local writers, producers and directors in preparing a slate of projects for the national and international TV market.
Alice Morrison, chief executive of North West Vision, said: "We are proud to match the skill, passion and commitment of these companies with properly tailored financial support, backed up with ongoing advice, contacts and support.
"These awards are just the beginning of a process that will see us distribute over £2.2m of Objective 1 funding to Merseyside's film, television and digital media sector over the next 24 months.
