THE world's most famous ship will officially launch Liverpool's Mathew Street Festival. The QE2 will give three blasts on its siren to mark the start of Europe's biggest free city centre music celebration. The giant liner will sound the signal at 11am on August 30, the summer bank holiday Monday. The presence of the QE2, at what is also the culmination of Liverpool's annual Beatles convention, is expected to swell record crowds by up to 50,000. An unprecedented 250,000 spectators and music fans are being predicted for the city's 12th Mathew Street spectacular. The overall area to be used for this year's festival is bigger than the Glaston-bury site. More than 150 bands from 22 countries have been booked to take part. They will perform on four giant outdoor stages and at 40 indoor venues. The QE2, berthed mid-river, will form the backdrop for a new stage at the Pier Head. A festival producer said: "Revellers on board will be able to join in the party as they will be in earshot of some of the main action." This year's Mathew Street Festival will have a special theme celebrating Liverpool's twinning with Memphis, the birthplace of rock 'n' roll.. Legendary Memphis band Sam The Sham will play as special guests at the Mathew Street Festival, together with Beat Generation, the group which won the Memphis exchange battle of the bands competition organised by owners of the Cavern club. -SOURCE-
