A major conference is being held to discuss Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture, 2008.
More than 100 communication professionals representing the cultural, public and voluntary sectors are to meet to discuss promoting the city as European Capital of Culture.
The conference, supported by the Northwest Regional Development Agency, is to be held on Tuesday, September 14.
It has been titled “Ask Not…’’, in reference to John F. Kennedy’s famous inaugural speech which called on people to ‘’Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country’’.
It is a chance for organisations to discuss what they can do for the city, how they can play a direct role in Liverpool’s once-in-a-lifetime year, and exploit the enormous communications opportunities offered.
‘’Ask Not…’’ will include workshops and presentations by key culture leaders such as ’08 Artistic Director Robyn Archer. Organisations will be able to question culture chiefs about their plans and explore their own contribution to the year.
It will be a rare opportunity for press officers, public relations and marketing professionals in the region’s public and cultural sectors to meet and discuss plans for 2008, and help shape them.
The Liverpool Culture Company wants to involve as many people and organisations as possible to communicate Liverpool’s success story.
Council leader Mike Storey said: ‘’2008 is a once-in-a-lifetime year for Liverpool and this conference comes at a decisive moment.
‘’Now is the time for us to start reaching out to everyone in the city and wider region to discuss and debate how Liverpool can fully capitalise on ‘08. Our communications professionals are a key audience to help the city reach the rest of the world.
“This will be the first of a series of conferences about ’08. Everyone in Liverpool must have the chance to express their creativity and share our determination to make this the best ever European Capital of Culture. We must leave no-one out.”
Key elements of the ‘’Ask Not…’’ conference include:
• Keynote speeches from Robyn Archer, 08’s Artistic Director; Loyd Grossman, Member of the Capital of Culture Board; Liverpool city council leader Mike Storey and Peter Mearns, Director of Marketing at the Northwest Regional Development Agency
• ‘Question Time’ with the BBC’s Andy Gill as conference chair
• Workshops with Sue Woodward, Creative Director of Manchester’s Commonwealth Games and Enrico Da Malo, MD of the 2004 European Capital of Culture, Genoa
• Culture Director workshops, including ‘The new Liverpool Brand’; ‘What’s the Story?’ and ‘Selling Liverpool’
The unique one day conference is being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, at the Pier Head in Liverpool.
Peter Mearns, Director of Marketing at the Northwest Regional Development Agency, said: ““Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture year will have long lasting benefits that will be felt right across England’s Northwest and beyond.
“It is vital that all communication opportunities are exploited in order to fully capitalize on this, and this conference is a fantastic opportunity for communications professionals to join forces and ensure that 2008 is a resounding and memorable success.“
After the conference, delegates will be able to meet with Capital of Culture staff and representatives of the media on Merseyside. Following a champagne reception hosted by Grosvenor, there will be a social evening with a line up of cultural entertainment including a star harpist, acapella voices, gospel, jazz and dancing.
