A SPECTACULAR sculpture by Turner Prize winning Angel of the North artist Antony Gormley could soon be installed at the mouth of the Mersey.
The artist has agreed to consider loaning a piece called Another Place to Sefton Council, to be sited on Crosby beach near Waterloo Marina as part of Liverpool's Capital of Culture 2008 celebrations.
The impressive coastline sculpture features 100 identical life-size cast iron figures looking out to sea, with their feet in stages of engulfment by the sand, and waves at high tide.
The piece, estimated to be worth around £1m, has previously been installed at a river estuary in DePanne, in Belgium, in 2003, the shores of Stavenger in Norway in 1998, and at Cuxhaven in Germany in 1997.
Mr Gormley, whose famous work The Field is on display at the Tate gallery on the Albert Dock, is away working on another project in Germany, and was last night unavailable for comment.
But a spokeswoman at his London gallery confirmed he is preparing to visit Crosby before the end of this month to assess if the site is suitable.
If chosen, it will be the first time the sculpture has been exhibited in the UK.
It is hoped the figures would be installed in time for Liverpool's Year of the Sea celebrations in 2005, and would remain here on loan for three or four years.
The spokeswoman said: "We are looking at Crosby as a possibility. We are in the very early stages. It is very much a question of whether the tide times are suitable.
"Mr Gormley is going to visit the site before the end of the month."
A report due to be considered by Crosby's local area committee on September 8 estimates installing the sculpture would cost £60,000-£100,000.

I hope this happens. I like Gormley. Always thought the Angel of the North captured the spirit of Tyneside and you can't help but be impressed by The Field at Tate Liverpool.
