4 Builders shortlisted to build it........
FOUR major companies have been shortlisted for a consultancy role for the Fourth Grace.
Although the contract itself does not cover the construction work, it is likely that the company that gets it will go on to complete the job, worth around £140m.
Laing O'Rourke, Bovis Lend Lease, Kajima and Carillion are all competing to work on the prestigious project for the building designed by architect Will Alsop.
The contract covers consultancy work for the project team, including planning applications and design development.
In a report by industry magazine Construction News, a source from Neptune Developments, part of the Fourth Grace Consortium, said: "Nothing is ever certain but there is a good chance the winning firm may be in a position to negotiate the construction contract in due course."
A spokesman for Neptune said that he did not want to comment because of the delicate commercial nature of the bidding process.
A spokesman for Bovis Lend Lease said: "We are pleased to make it to this stage of the project and we are hopeful that we will make it for the final place."
Laing O'Rourke, Kajima and Carillion did not wish to make any comment last night.
Kajima, the world's third largest construction firm, last month put forward a plan for Liverpool and Everton football clubs to share a ground on waterfront land.
The site, between Stanley and Waterloo docks, is owned by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board which wants to redevelop 90 acres of disused space.
Laing O'Rourke is an international construction group which employs more than 15,000 people globally, of which 9,000 are in the UK.
Annual turnover for 2003 is £1.2bn.
Bovis Land Lease ranks among the world's leading project and construction companies.
Founded in London in 1885, it now has 7,500 employees in 93 offices world-wide.
Carillion was created in 1999, when it broke away from Tarmac.
It is a leader in integrated business and construction, a FTSE 350 company with a turnover of £1,900m and 18,000 employees.
The FGC hopes to decide on a final shortlist before Christmas with an appointment for the consultancy work early in the new year.
Yesterday, the Daily Post revealed that around £65m of Merseyside's Objective 1 programme is to be dedicated to Liverpool's waterfront, the majority to help flagship projects such as the Fourth Grace and the Kings Dock arena become a reality.

A PLANNING application for the Fourth Grace will be submitted inside three months.
The timescale was revealed by the landmark scheme's private sector partners as they brought leading city figures up to date with its progress at Mathew Street's View Two gallery.
Information about the £228m Cloud project, which will sit alongside Liverpool's famous Three Graces at the Pier Head, has been at a premium up to this point.
